Capturing Spirit

Tourism Whistler asked me to cover Ironman Canada for it’s return to our beautiful mountain valley. Generally, we photographers focus on the winners and breakthrough performances at sports events. I was asked to take a different approach.

My goal was to capture the emotions of the day and not just of the top athletes. I focused in on the amateurs with a goal of finishing, the volunteers generously donating their time putting on a world class event, and the spectators on course all day cheering racers on.

There were no shortage of inspiring stories of how each competitor came to be here. Each and every one as interesting as the last. I really enjoyed capturing the spirit of this event. There aren’t many more inspiring moments in life than seeing people accomplish their dreams.
